HTC Rumored To Unveil First 2013 Windows Phone

Reports indicate that HTC will indeed release a new, mid-priced Windows phone, dubbed “HTC Tiara” internally, with moderate hardware and specs.

HTC enthusiasts have awaited the release of a new Windows-based smartphone for 2013, ever since the new Windows 8 mobile platform gained popularity and interest at the end of 2011. A new leaked report now suggests that HTC is indeed preparing to release its first Windows smartphone of 2013, but that it will not be the high-end “HTV Zenith” that tech analysts were anticipating.

According to BGR, the new HTC Windows phone, which is referred to internally by the company as “Tiara,” is more of a mid-priced smartphone with matching hardware features:

“The device, which is known internally as the “HTC Tiara,” is said to be equipped with a 4.3-inch WVGA display, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and an 8-megapixel rear camera. Other specs include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera and an 1,800 mAh battery.”

Reports indicate that the new device will launch in May, and while its tech specs are not particularly high-performance, the price tag and large display will clearly attract new users looking to experience Window 8’s engaging “live tiles” user interface.

While Windows 8 enjoyed a high level of early buzz in the press, sales of Windows smartphones have been lackluster at best. It is possible that HTC’s shift from a premium-priced smartphone that would compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung to a mid-level smartphone might be in response to lukewarm Windows 8 sales, and a hope that a value-priced design might work better given the current market conditions.
