iPhone 5S Production Appears To Be In Progress

Written by on March 6, 2013 in iPhone - No comments

New news out of Asia suggests that Foxconn, Apple’s assembly partner for the iPhone, is ramping up production for the iPhone 5S, suggesting a possible June release.

Rumors surrounding the next iPhone have been hard to track over the past few months, with rumors swirling about a refreshed iPhone 5S, overhauled iPhone 6, or perhaps even a budget-priced iPhone that could debut in 2013 for as little as $330. However, as the year progresses on, it is seemingly likely that Apple will hold off on the overhauled iPhone 6 for 2014, and instead issue a refreshed iPhone 5S sometimes between June and November.

Recent reports out of Asia, however, suggest that June might in fact be a possibility, with the iPhone release once again returning to the keynote address at this year’s WWDC.

A report from the Japanese tech rumor website Macotakara suggests via a “reliable source” that Foxconn has already begun the assembly process for the iPhone 5S. According to CNET:

“The 5S is being built on the same production line as the iPhone 5, according to Macotakara.
The Japanese blog goes on to claim that NTT Docomo is cutting back on orders for Android devices to make way for introduction of the iPhone. NTT Docomo does not currently carry the iPhone . . . The 5S may use a new A7 Apple chip, a better camera based on a LED technology referred to as “Smart Flash, a fingerprint chip, and versions will support China’s time-division duplexing (TDD) standard, according to recent speculation.”

The notion that the iPhone 5S could already be in production makes some sense, since we have had some early production reports that both the A7 processor chip and in-cell screen technology has already been in the works for some time. Considering that Foxconn is Apple’s assembly partner, and that they were responsible for the production of the iPhone 5 as a “finished product,” it would stand to reason that if assembly has begun at Foxconn, the iPhone 5S could indeed be released in June.

A key to that happening, of course, is iOS 7. Considering that Apple always releases a new iPhone along with a new alpha version of iOS, that would mean that iOS 7 would need to be released in beta form soon, in order to give developers enough lead time in testing to ensure an alpha release at the WWDC along with the iPhone 5S.
