After rumors that the HTC One was encountering component supply issues, the company has confirmed production and release delays for their new flagship smartphone.

As we reported in a previous article about concerns over component supply issues of the new ultrapixel camera sensor for the HTC One, it now appears that the issues are indeed official. HTC has confirmed that there will be both production and release delyas in certain regions as a result of supply chain difficulties.

According to IGN:

. . . although shipping dates for the smartphone have been relatively fuzzy, HTC had hoped for a U.K rollout on March 15th and a global release before the end of the month.

Interestingly, the HTC One is already available in Germany, as O2 continues to ship the smartphone despite delays in other markets. Other European countries  are included in this delay and may not see the phone until April, and the U.S. has yet to have a confirmed rollout plan from the smartphone maker.

An HTC spokesperson confirmed the delay in a brief statement to IGN:

“We will start fulfilling pre-orders by end March in certain markets and will roll out to more markets as we approach April.”

From a PR standpoint, it is an ignominious start for the HTC One, which HTC hopes will become its flagship smartphone design, able to take on the likes of the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S4. At present, it appears that either the company mismanaged its supply chain plans, or else did not count on how rival smartphone designs might also be pulling parts from their own efforts to keep the HTC One’s production on track.

Of course, another possibility is that the supposed “production delay” may in fact be a ploy by HTC to put more distance between the release of the HTC One and the Samsung GS$, which is due out in the middle of the month. We’ve already seen Blackberry move back its U.S. release of their new Z10 smartphone in order to avoid losing out on press coverage, thanks to the GS4 release. It’s possible that HTC is doing the same thing, and seeing April as a more viable month to release the HTC One.
