Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs iPad Mini

Written by on April 12, 2013 in iPad, Samsung - No comments

We have another new entry to the competitive line of 7-8” tablets with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 being released shortly.  However in this new model from Samsung, it is surprisingly starting at a higher price of $399 vs $329 for the 16gb iPad Mini.  So what do you get for $70 more?  A higher resolution screen at 1280 x 800 with 189 ppi vs 1024 x 768 and 163 ppi for the iPad Mini.  The Note 8 also includes Samsung’s S pen, if you prefer to take notes and navigate with a stylus, this might be the tablet for you.

As documented by International Business Times, the Samsung will come pre-stocked with some valuable software just not offered with Apple’s iPad Mini:

“The tablet will be preloaded with content, estimated at around $200, like 50 GB of Dropbox storage for 24 months and one month of unlimited Music Hub streaming etc. Customer will also receive a limited $25 Google Play voucher as they register the device. Note 8 will also feature Samsung’s WatchON service, which acts as a digital TV guide.”

However the largest mark against the Note 8 is the starting price – it does not really have anything outstanding that justifies the price.  Most all other higher end Android (and Kindle ) tablets have a starting price about $200 less for just a slightly smaller screen.

So if having a writing stylus included with your tablet is a requirement, or you want to keep the same manufacturer family as your smartphone, then the Note 2 just might be for you.  But if price is more of a concern, then you might want to look at (this may be a Apple first) the more ‘economical’ iPad Mini.
